NEST headquarters was in a state of high alert. Lennox had received the message from Sam and was quickly preparing for their unexpected guests—particularly the uninvited ones.

“We’ve got Decepticons converging on Washington. Optimus is at Andrews Air Force Base…. Get him back here now! We need to guard Sentinel. Move every NEST team out and spread through Washington. Make a perimeter.”

Ironhide and Ratchet sped out of the hangar and joined Lennox at the main gate. To their relief, the first vehicle they saw was Sentinel Prime’s fire engine. Opening the gates, they allowed the former Autobot leader to enter the compound.

Peering down the road, they could see the convoy approaching. Bumblebee still held the lead position, followed closely by Mirage and Sideswipe.

They flew through the gates and screeched to a halt, converting into their robot forms. Sam jumped out of Bumblebee and ran over to Lennox. Looking around, Sam breathed a sigh of relief. Surrounded by seven Autobots and at least fifty highly trained NEST soldiers, he felt confident that they could keep Sentinel safe from Decepticon attack.

“Ironhide!” Lennox shouted. “You three protect Sentinel! The rest of you, guard the perimeter. Watch the road, and the air. Energon sensors will give us only two minutes’ warning before the attack.”

“Keep him guarded!” Sam repeated. “He’s the key!”

Sentinel looked at Sam. “Yes. As I always have been.”

Without warning, Sentinel Prime raised his blaster and sent a pulse of plasma tearing through Ironhide. “I am sorry, my Autobot brothers. But we were never going to win the war. For the sake of our planet’s survival, a deal with Megatron had to be made.”

Ironhide fell to his knees, gravely injured.

“He’s with the Decepticons!” Lennox shouted.

Sam had not yet recovered from the shock when he saw Sentinel level his weapon again, this time at Bumblebee. In the open, with no time to react, Bumblebee was an easy target.

“No… NO! Bumblebee, watch out!” screamed Sam. Bumblebee dodged just in time.

“Get all NEST forces back to base—we’re under attack!” Lennox yelled into his radio. “Sentinel Prime is a traitor!”

Sentinel moved off toward the hangar. His shield blocked the blasts from the Autobots’ weapons, and he did not even seem to notice the sharp ping of bullets from the NEST soldiers. He headed toward the vault where the five pillars had been placed.

Director Mearing stood between Sentinel and the vault. She surveyed the damage he had done, looking over the smoking ruin of helicopters and NEST vehicles. Disoriented, she looked up. “Sentinel, stop! What are you doing?”

“I am a Prime from the great planet Cybertron. I do not take orders from you. Now return what belongs to me,” he demanded. Without waiting for her to respond, Sentinel strode past Mearing and tore the doors off the vault. He reached inside and removed the five pillars. Without any further notice of the destruction and chaos around him, he changed into his vehicle mode.

Sam and Lennox watched as the red fire engine burst from the hangar. Sentinel sped past them, crashing through the gates and out onto the road.
